I noticed these wonderful flowers in San Francisco’s Botanical Garden, in the area known as the Exhibition Garden. They are a rare variety of abutilon, sometimes called Flowering Maple.
It’s very easy to see why they’re called Temple Bells. I was fascinated by their brilliant colors and the appearance of the red veins. Apparently other varieties of the abutilon are saucer shaped; they are in the mallow family and so are related to hibiscus and hollyhocks. But these are certainly some spectacular looking flowers!
