Back in the days before airliners, when long distance travel in the United States meant a journey by train, the various railroad lines strove to provide a luxurious dining experience for their passengers. Each line had its uniquely designed place settings. The California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento displays a number of these matched sets in its dining car exhibit, invoking the ambience of a long-gone era of impeccable service and elegant cuisine.
