A forgotten rose

My very elderly neighbor’s house has been standing vacant for a few years now, although her son comes by regularly to mow the lawn and keep an eye on things.

Today, after yet another heavy rainstorm blew through, I happened to go out to my backyard and noticed a bright spot of color from behind the fence. For some reason, it reminded me of a short poem recited by Aunt Bee on an episode of The Andy Griffith Show.

A rose I give to you
This rose so fresh with fragrance rare,
Its petals bringing joy to you
The fairest of the fair.

Oh roses are like memories
They fade and pass above
But you dear heart will ‘er remain
my fading flower of forgotten love.
