California Woodpeckers
Every now and again I’ll spot a woodpecker around here, usually high up on a tree happily drilling away. I’ve been frustrated by my inability to photograph one of these gorgeous birds; but last week I finally got lucky.
I had to refer to my Field Guide to Western Birds, but I’m pretty sure these are a couple of male California Woodpeckers, also known as Acorn Woodpeckers. Now that I know they’re interested in this fallen dead tree, I’ll be watching carefully for more opportunities to shoot them.

Love the woodpeckers!! Amazing birds and so beautiful. Thanks for posting, Christine!
I was so pleased to get some halfway decent shots of them. Now I’d like another chance with my new camera that has a longer zoom!
