Rabbit or Hare?
It was about 7:30 in the morning, and I was headed to Slate Bar when I first spied this guy sitting about 30 yards away from me in a field; after I finally realized it wasn’t just a stump, I thought he looked like a cottontail. However, it’s rare to see cottontails this near the river — according to the Big Guy, it must be a jackrabbit (which actually aren’t rabbits at all but hares).
Still, the more we studied these images, the less sure both of us were. He’s missing the huge ears tipped in black. For now, the consensus is that it must be a young jack, still growing his ears out. But if anyone has another idea, please let me know!
