Gang of three

I had an unexpected close encounter while hiking down the trail towards Snipes Ravine yesterday morning (walking distance from my house). Most of the deer I’ve spotted on or near Mississippi Bar are much farther away and are quick to take flight at any sight of humans. But these three — two does and a buck — seem to be curious yearlings. The young buck, on the right, has started growing his antlers but clearly still has a long way to grow!

With their very large ears and black tail, these deer may be hybrids of blacktail and mule deer

      • Yeah, that’s too bad. I used to see a herd of blacktail near the freeway before the land was developed. Luckily they had the nearby river parkway to transfer to. But we also have mountain lions keeping the population under control.
