The Adventure Continues… Under Lake Arrowhead

HH2011c
I’ve never visited Lake Arrowhead in Southern California, but this is still one of my favorite episodes of California’s Gold. Maybe it’s because of the complicated history of the lake’s construction; or because I’m fascinated by the old tunnels that lead under Lake Arrowhead itself. Or maybe it’s because Huell has so much fun riding in an 80-year-old elevator and seeing the heavy equipment left to rust in the silent darkness. For a little extra added entertainment, you might try counting how many times during the episode Huell says, “Oh, my gosh!”

Originally built as a reservoir to feed the citrus groves of San Bernardino through a series of flumes and tunnels, this engineering marvel fell apart. For legal reasons, the project never worked and the reservoir became a recreational area. What most people don’t know is that there is a whole world under the lake.
