I apologize for the blurry images, but these energetic little birds are always so busy when I see them in the morning, flying high, swooping to catch insects, and landing on tree branches up near the top of the Palisades. Occasionally I’ll spot one perched on a shrub beside the lake, and although they do have a very fine profile, their colors don’t show up as well when I shoot them from behind! Kingbirds also extremely vocal — you can hear a few examples of their chattering if you scroll down a bit on the Audubon Field Guide page. Until a month ago, I wasn’t even aware of their existence, and I’m so glad I learned about these spunky little flycatchers!
