The last time I hiked the Monte Vista Trail I chose the northern loop and wound up on top of Falcon Crest. It was early May a year ago, and the morning was cool, with clouds hiding the tops of the surrounding hills. This time I got a late start and the day was already warming up fast. I headed south, not really sure where I would end up. After a couple of miles, where I ended up was near the back of New York Creek. Low water levels have left New York Creek a ghost of its former self. I left the trail to walk down to the rock-strewn inlet; by this time it was nearly 3 o’clock, and I decided I had better turn around rather than try to cross the creek and continue on toward Peanut Point. Further explorations would have to wait until another day.
