I didn’t manage to explore the east Texas town of Emory during our brief overnight visit last June. One reason was the oppressive heat and humidity — and the other was that our main reason for being there was to check out Lake Fork, a famous bass-fishing area just down the road. According to Google, the town’s population is just a bit over 1,200, no doubt swelling quite a bit whenever a bunch of professional fishermen arrive for a tournament. As we drove from Dallas along Highway 276 we crossed bridges spanning two other large reservoirs, Lake Ray Hubbard and Lake Tawakoni; and I learned that along secondary roads in Texas the FM abbreviation on the road signs has nothing to do with radio frequencies. It means Farm to Market, and this designation has been in place since 1937.
