I’ve been wanting to stop and explore the trails at Russian Gulch State Park for a long time. Yesterday I finally got a chance to spend a couple of hours — not nearly enough to see everything, but enough to fall in love with this gorgeous part of the coast.

Russian Gulch State Park was established in 1932. Just two miles north of the town of Mendocino, the 1305-acre park includes varied habitats: coastal headlands and pine forest, a verdant stream canyon and wooded ridges. Local Indian tales of seeing Russian hunters with large ships landing at this cove in the late eighteenth century led to the name “Russian Gulch” — The Hiker’s Hip Pocket Guide to the Mendocino Coast
