Memory Monday: Salmon River, 1966

It’s been awhile since I did a Memory Monday post, mostly because I haven’t felt greatly inspired. But today I’m excited about it, because I went out to Denio’s on Sunday afternoon and found a wonderful little photo album that I just had to bring home. I don’t know who the people in the photos are, but as soon as I saw these prints I knew the Big Guy would appreciate them, and hopefully other people will too. I present them here in the order they appeared in the album — although it does seem they’re not in chronological order. Either way, even if you’re not into hunting and (like me) have never done a pack-mule camping trip, I suspect that these images will leave you with a feeling of nostalgia and a smile on your face.

“Warren and Ray on Salmon River. Flew in from Boise”

It took me awhile to realize this is actually a biplane! Google tells me it’s a Beechcraft Model 17 Staggerwing — which was a vintage plane even in 1966 and has a fascinating history.

Does anybody ever camp like this anymore? These days everything is lightweight nylon and aluminum tent poles, folding chairs and propane stoves. But doesn’t that canvas tent look inviting? Notice the axe on the ground at left and the shovel propped up on the right. I’m sure he used that axe to cut down the trees framing his tent. There’s also a woodburning stove already putting out smoke through the chimney.
