When I was sharing my favorite images of waterfowl a couple of days ago, I somehow managed to overlook this handsome male mallard I recently spotted in Nice (Lake County). As I was leaving our rooms at 8:30 to make a run to the nearby supermarket, there he was standing on one foot atop what I could only assume was his Toyota Rav4, looking as proud as … well, as a duck with a new set of wheels. I managed a quick shot with my phone camera before driving away, figuring he would have moved on by the time I returned. But no — 30 minutes later there he was, settled in nicely, keeping a close eye on anyone who happened to pass. It eventually occurred to me that I was looking at the very latest in auto theft deterrence, and most certainly a luxury option that is unfortunately beyond the means of most of us folks.
