I’ve written before about the various driftwood shelters to be found along the shores of Folsom Lake, like this one or this one. Or like the large one along the South Fork near Salmon Falls, which until now was my solid favorite. That changed a couple of weeks ago when I stumbled across an even more lovingly constructed shelter near […]
Here is a random collection of things that caught my eye over three separate visits to the same area of Folsom Lake, along the North Fork near the Narrows.
In this hour-long episode, Huell explores a portion of Glacier Bay National Park that relatively few visitors choose to see. While the lure of the glaciers and calving icebergs is completely understandable, I think it would be a real shame to miss this beautiful forest trail. I’m very grateful for this opportunity to pause and listen to the sounds of […]

(Ditches were also constructed around the same period along both sides of the South Fork, but I’ve never seen the remains of these.) I’ve shot photos of bits and pieces […]

Out at Folsom Lake, along the north fork of the American River, the birds are much more shy — so I was pleased […]
Point Loma, San Diego — This picturesque and historic lighthouse high on Point Loma was in service for only 36 years, from 1855 to 1891. It was removed from service and replaced by a new lighthouse in a different location that wasn’t obscured by clouds and fog. I shared my own photos from this visit in October 2018.
A few days ago I posted a photo I shot at Folsom Lake showing a high curved rock wall. I took my initial pictures from a distance and didn’t have a chance to explore the wall more closely — but when I got home and started looking at the area on Google maps, something odd caught my attention. The screenshot […]
