Venturing out to experience the near-total solar eclipse last August felt like an experiment, although I wasn’t prepared to risk damaging my new camera by actually pointing it at the sky. Instead, I sat on the bluffs above Lake Natoma and played with some of the Canon’s settings I wasn’t familiar with, like the Creative Shot mode, in which the camera applies special effects and composes the shot to emphasize the subject, creating six new images for each shot.
