Killdeer at New York Creek

Last week I may not have found a lot of water in Folsom Lake’s New York Creek, on the south fork of the American River, but I was lucky enough to get some good shots of the Killdeer. Normally, I can’t get close enough for a decent look at these very shy shorebirds. Check out those big beautiful eyes (you can click on the image to get a closer look). I believe this may be a mating pair, but the differences between males and females are quite subtle, demonstrated mostly by bill size and coloring.

Watching from the shore; I think this is the male, while the bird in the creek may be female

Goose tracks in sticky mud — not a problem for the killdeer
