After coming home from a Folsom Lake hike with the Big Guy yesterday, we both collapsed in front of the TV and somehow found ourselves watching a couple of great Vincent Price movies: The Last Man on Earth (1964) and Master of the World (1961). I had never heard of either of them, but they got me thinking about this episode of Visiting — actually one of my favorites, because although I grew up thinking of Vincent Price as a master of horror, this episode demonstrates an entirely different side to the man. His passion for the visual arts comes through loud and clear; and the museum which bears his name demonstrates and continues that passion even today. So while I’ll keep on enjoying his movies, it’s also good to know that he left behind a much more important and ongoing legacy.

Huell tours the Vincent Price Art Museum, which opened in May 2011 at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park. The museum contains 9,000 items, many of which were donated by the late actor. Victoria Price leads the tour of her father’s vast collection of fine art and shows why this gallery is one of Los Angeles’s best kept secrets. We also look back at Huell’s original 1989 ‘Videolog’ interview with Vincent Price himself.
