Memory Monday: Fort Hunter Liggett

Palisades

Today’s batch of images, pulled from what I’ve been calling the Korean photo albums, were actually shot near California’s central coast. Located in the center of Monterey County, Fort Hunter Liggett is the largest US Army Reserve post. These photos were shot 16 August 1980, and thus far, they are the only pictures I’ve found with handwritten notes on the back! I’ve never been to this part of the state, but the base does have a primitive campground open to the public as well as the Hacienda, designed by Julia Morgan (of Hearst Castle fame), where guests can stay. You may also recall that Huell Howser visited Fort Hunter Liggett in search of the historic Mission San Antonio de Padua, which I featured back in March 2021.
