Wild waters

Looking upstream, May 12

At this fairly isolated spot just across the river from the fish hatchery, a small island blocks the view of the main stream of the American River. Still, I thought the current looked pretty boisterous when I visited Sailor Bar two weeks ago — but on today’s visit I found the rocky shore where I stood that day is now under water, and the small piles of rocks had disappeared. I couldn’t stand in the same spots where I took the earlier photos without wading in the river — and with the current flowing past at 15,000 cubic feet per second, there was no way I was doing that!
