Looking good

Yesterday ‘s post featured a visit to Iwasaka Images of America, a Southern California company that produces extremely realistic and delicious-looking samples of food, mainly for the restaurant industry. I’m not sure if the food images I saw last summer in the window of this restaurant were created by that same company, but it’s quite possible they were. The cafe, […]

The Adventure Continues… Fake Food

I apologize in advance if today’s featured episode gets your stomach growling or wakes up your sweet tooth! This segment of Visiting originally aired in January 2001, but I thought it would be fun to take a look at it on Valentine’s Day. Fake food is certainly one way of avoiding unwanted calories, and this company is apparently still very […]

Albion studio

When we headed over to the Mendocino coast last October, we found ourselves staying in a place that was new to us. Rather than Point Arena or farther north in Mendocino, we opted for a more central location — in the vicinity of the tiny town of Albion, near the Navarro River. At first I was concerned that our lodgings were so small, basically one room. But I actually loved staying here and wouldn’t mind returning sometime. Although Highway 1 was only a stone’s throw from our door, traffic noise was almost nonexistent. And while the view from our rear balcony included a small house below us on the same property, we felt comfortably secluded, with magnificent ocean vistas and a beautiful sunset just about every night.

Point Arena palette

I’ve discovered that the small town of Point Arena in Mendocino County is a great place to spend a few days — or even longer — no matter what time of year. The last time we were there was in December; the weather was a bit unpredictable, and I didn’t get out and go hiking as much as I normally […]

Low tide

Doran is a required stop on every coastal trip, the spot where we gather ghost shrimp to use as live bait. We never know exactly what the tide situation will be until we arrive — more than once we’ve waded in knee-deep water as we collected the allowed number of pale pink shrimp. The tide sat just right on this […]

The Adventure Continues… Seal Beach

Whenever I think of Seal Beach the first thing that comes to mind is Leisure World, the huge retirement community based in this Southern California coastal town. That’s because I still recall a few visits my family had with a lovely older couple who lived there when I was quite young. I have at least one photo of Grandma Pat, […]

Mendocino big trees

Whenever I go hiking alone in a place like the Ecological Staircase at Jug Handle Reserve, I’m never sure how much exercise I’m actually getting. I may end up walking three or four miles — and more if I have time — but I tend to go slowly as I gaze around, admiring the beauty and shooting photos. I’m perpetually […]

Memory Monday (Mexico)

This week I have a handful of slide images from December 1981 that I’ve hesitated to share for awhile. Although I was present for at least some of them, my memories are very vague, and I wish I could remember more details. I actually kept a small journal but it provides only sparse information. My family was spending Christmas and […]

At Castle Peak

Whenever I take a deep dive into my photo archives in the search for any specific item, I usually end up stumbling across other images long forgotten. That was how I came across these pictures which I shot back in July 2006. I was using my new Kodak EasyShare Z7590, a compact little point-and-shoot with 10x optical zoom, and the […]
