In the Texas Panhandle
I’ll admit I don’t know all that much about the High Plains of Texas, but after making six trips through Amarillo and along U.S. Route 287 to the Fort Worth area, I’ve become somewhat familiar with the tiny towns along the way. It’s actually sort of amazing that such a seemingly flat, boring landscape can encompass so much incredible history; this region was once home to the Comanche, including Quanah Parker, and later held vast cattle ranching spreads. Many of my images were shot while traveling along the highway last June, but we stopped to eat our lunch in the small city of Claude, in Armstrong County. I couldn’t resist checking out the six historical markers lined up in front of the building. Today I’m showing you three — and see if you can spot the small mistake on the first one, dated 1971.
