The abandoned: Mendocino farmhouse

The front porch has two doors into the house

This was the one place I had never intended to explore. It frankly gave me the creeps every time I walked past it on my way to Manchester Beach, and while I wished I could learn more about the history of the place, I was content to let it rest in peace. But I did find the courage to peek into one gaping window and see a large parlor-type room with a fireplace.

The Big Guy had already told me about a fallen tree blocking the trail near this house, and I imagined the tree must be directly behind/west of the structure. So when I hiked over on a bright, sunny morning to see for myself, I reasoned that there might be a shortcut around the fallen tree… like, maybe through the kitchen. I mean, there was an open door on the east side, and I could see yet another door a few steps across the floor to the west. And as long as I was in the kitchen, I figured I may as well shoot a few photos.

As it turned out, my shortcut was completely unnecessary; the tree had fallen further along up the trail — and my pictures came out blurry. However, now my desire to try for better pictures got the better of me, and a few days later I returned to the kitchen. After that… well, the rest of the house was just sitting there, spookily inviting, and can you see how easily I slid right down that slippery slope? I have quite a few more photos from inside the house, and I’ll be sharing more in upcoming posts.
