One night in Clarendon

I’ve written before about passing through Clarendon, Texas, on our travels to and from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. I never manage to shoot very many photos because our stops are so brief — but this time we actually did spend a night in town. Unfortunately, the wind was pretty much howling and the chilly evening temperatures didn’t encourage much exploring (which seemed to be a recurring theme on this particular road trip), so most of my pictures are from in and around the hotel: the views looking out various windows and some very cool Texas-themed hallway photographs. Not really worth blogging about, in fact, except for one image of which I’m especially proud.

This mural was completed fairly recently, in September 2024, painted by artist Malcolm Byers of Amarillo, Texas. That means it was still a work in progress the last time I passed through Clarendon, and I don’t recall even noticing it on that occasion. I’m quite proud of my photograph because when I pointed my camera out the car window in passing, I fully expected to be disappointed with the results. We had just pulled ahead of a large tractor-trailer rig in the right-hand lane when I clicked the shutter; and I was astonished to find my image was perfectly straight and showed the wall in perfect detail! I think the town of Clarendon is rightly very proud of this beautiful mural, and I’m so happy I got the chance to see it for myself.
