More from Eagle Lake

The remainder of my phone pictures from September 2023, showing the area of Spalding Marina and the view from Dow Butte. The informational sign shown above reads as follows:

Eagle Lake sits at about 5,110 feet above sea level in beautiful northeastern California, about 16 miles north of Susanville in Lassen County. It is the second largest natural freshwater lake completely in California. The lake covers approximately 23,000 acres, extends about 13 miles from north to south, and varies from about 1/2 mile to 4 miles wide.

Eagle Lake and its surroundings are located on the semi-arid Modoc Plateau which is geologically characterized by basalt lava flows, shield volcanoes, and cinder cones. Some of the lava flows are fairly recent, having occurred not more than a few centuries ago. The western portion of Eagle Lake watershed consists mainly of volcanic mountains that form the eastern foothills of the Cascade Range. Orographic lift forces storms moving from west to east to drop the majority of their moisture along the crest of the Cascade Mountains creating a rain shadow to the east side of the mountain range. Eagle Lake exhibits a diverse geography as evergreen forests blend with sage steppe environments, illustrating a classic rain shadow effect. This special place provides a biologically diverse ecosystem for many types of animals and the reliable winds provide an ideal hunting ground for the lakes namesake, Bald and Golden Eagles.
