Mexico Monday, Week 21

A couple of memories really stand out for me about our trips to Mexico in the early 1970s. One is that a different color and type of fabric was chosen for the dresses worn by the women of the team each summer. One year the color was a bright reddish-orange; another year it was lime green. These were not bought […]

Mexico Monday, Week 20

I’m certain that all but one my images this week were shot during the summer of 1970, mostly because of the date stamp on the slide frame. I can also narrow down the time period, in some cases at least, by the eyeglasses I’m wearing or the length of my hair. I got my first pair of glasses in 1969, […]

Mexico Monday, Week 19

Welcome back to Mexico Monday! I’ve started going through the latest batch of slides which my mom recently discovered — and like the previous images I’ve shared, most of these are not labeled, although some of them have a date stamp showing when they were developed. I’m trying to organize them by year as much as possible, but it does […]

Memory Monday, Week 58

1971 — These will be my last bunch of regular family slides before returning to Mexico Monday next week, and they include some views from around the charming coastal town of Fort Bragg, California — not to be confused with Fort Bragg in North Carolina, although both carry the name of Confederate General Braxton Bragg. California’s Fort Bragg, in beautiful […]

Merry Christmas Eve!

On this mostly grey and chilly Christmas Eve, I spent my afternoon drinking mugs of hot tea and rewatching a collection of videos from my favorite childhood Christmas specials — Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the 1966 animated version with Boris Karloff). I finished off by watching “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” because I’ve always adored the Peanuts characters created by Charles Schulz, and the accompanying music by Vince GuaraldiĀ never fails to make me smile. As much as I enjoyed reliving my childhood memories with the other three Christmas specials, this is the one that captures the true spirit of the season best for me. Maybe you’ll enjoy watching it too. https://dailymotion.com/video/x2cgz0g

Memory Monday, Week 55

February-March 1957 Two weeks ago I started the narrative of this road trip with a look at Washington D.C.; but the nation’s capital was actually my parents’ last stop before turning west toward home in California. So this week I’d like to go back to the point where my mom and my sister arrived in Chicago on the train and […]

Memory Monday, Week 54

New York, 1957 — From Niagara Falls and Buffalo to the island of Manhattan and the top of the Empire State Building, with amazing views of the East River, Roosevelt Island, the Queensborough Bridge, and the Chrysler Building — I’m only sorry there aren’t more images to share from this road trip (or if there are I haven’t run across […]

Memory Monday, Week 53

Washington D.C., 1957 — Dwight D. Eisenhower was in the White House and I Love Lucy was in its final season on TV when my mom and dad along with my eldest sister visited the nation’s capital in 1957. They were undertaking a pretty epic road trip that began with my mom and sister taking the train from California to […]
