The theme for Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge this week is Places people visit.
The guard house, built between 1857 and 1859, is the oldest surviving structure on the island. Alcatraz was originally intended as a defensive fort but never saw battle; instead it served as a military prison until the mid 1930s, when it (briefly) became a federal penitentiary.

I always find tunnels a little bit irresistible, like a newly discovered trail promising adventure, beckoning me to explore. Here are a few tunnels I was able to shoot during my short stay in San Francisco last month.
This block of cells was closed off to the public — and the only spot that was not packed with people!
