Alcatraz guard house

The guard house, built between 1857 and 1859, is the oldest surviving structure on the island. Alcatraz was originally intended as a defensive fort but never saw battle; instead it served as a military prison until the mid 1930s, when it (briefly) became a federal penitentiary.
