This butterfly has the wonderful scientific name Vanessa annabella (West Coast painted lady). They have markings similar to the monarchs. I encountered this one near the bike trail across the river from Folsom. I tried to get a better angle on the wings, but my subject had no patience for paparazzi and flew away.
I saw classics from nearly every decade at the recent car show, but my favorites were those from the 1930s and 1940s. I wonder what their original owners might think if they could see them now?
