Sunshine on a cloudy day

All right, today wasn’t completely cloudy, although we did get some rain last night. In fact, the temperature felt wonderful to me, with just the right combination of breeze and sunshine. It was a perfect day for a two-hour walk, with an enthusiastic little Chihuahua for company, through streets I’ve never visited before. And when I noticed these flowers near […]

Sunny days

We are about to enter a big heat wave, so any walking I’m doing will be early in the morning. Not too many people about — which is nice — but still plenty of bright, cheerful flowers to keep me company. Can’t really complain about that.

Let it pour

As I write this, we’re getting buckets full of April showers, just because Mother Nature decided that this year is meant to make up for all the past years of drought. I’m not actually complaining! — but I have to laugh because I drove to the supermarket in slightly drizzly weather to pick up a few things, and when I came back outside the water works had been turned on full blast. Of course, I was parked at the far edge of the lot. So by the time I reached my car, my trousers were soaked, my shoes were soaked, and my hat was soaked. I’m just grateful I didn’t decide to walk to the store! Thanks to all the rain (and mountain snow) this season, the weeds as well as the wildflowers are busting out all over. It’s a pretty sight at the moment, but soon enough the foxtails will dry up and turn brown, creating potential fire hazards — and dangers for any dog or cat unlucky enough to get one embedded in an ear, or nose, or even a foot. My morning also got off to a bit of a crazy start today. I’ve been listening to Stephen King’s book Insomnia via the Overdrive app on my phone, and I knew my loan was about to expire; in fact, when I opened it up this morning, I had a mere 50 minutes left! I was very close to […]

March is roaring again

The old saying claims that “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” But in reality, some of our windiest days around here fall somewhere between late March and early April. That’s certainly true this year — the past couple of days the winds have been gusting wildly — and it was also true last spring, when […]

The Adventure Continues… California Flowers

Spring flowers are popping out everywhere as the weather continues to warm up, so this week I thought I’d share an episode of California’s Gold in which Huell visits some incredibly beautiful and colorful spring flower blooms. Enjoy! One of Huell’s favorite things is when California blooms anew, bringing forth a striking display of flowers. Huell visits three places across the […]
