Cactus flower

If I had gotten up a little bit earlier this morning, I would have been able to capture these cactus blooms without the challenge of full sunlight. But they were still extremely attractive — especially to a honeybee, who just couldn’t tear herself away even though both her pollen baskets were full.

Painted lady

This butterfly has the wonderful scientific name Vanessa annabella (West Coast painted lady). They have markings similar to the monarchs. I encountered this one near the bike trail across the river from Folsom. I tried to get a better angle on the wings, but my subject had no patience for paparazzi and flew away.
