Tuesday morning on Rossmoor Bar, along the American River in Rancho Cordova.
I found the Dave Moore Nature Area almost by accident, as I was researching hiking trails in the area of Coloma. This quiet spot is just a short way up Highway 49 from the Marshall Gold Discovery SHP, and there’s no fee for parking or day use. This is a fun trail loop, not very demanding, that takes you down […]
I went along with the Big Guy this morning to check out River Bend Park in Rancho Cordova. It was my first time there, and I hadn’t realized the park was quite so large! Since we could stay for only about an hour today, I’m now looking forward to going back and exploring much more intensely. We did spot some […]
It’s kind of a fun challenge to try and photograph turtles sunning themselves on logs; they are extremely wary and tend to disappear into the water at the least sign of movement on the bank. Unfortunately, most of the turtles I see in my area are Red-eared Sliders, an invasive species that crowds out the native Western Pond Turtles.

These two girls seemed inclined to carry on as before, picking their way up the hill to my left — until they suddenly heard […]
I still have too many of those days when dragging myself out of the house for a walk feels like more trouble than it’s worth; I’ll tell myself I’ve hiked the same old trails so many times that there’s nothing new or interesting to see. It’s true, I don’t always come home with a bunch of great images on my […]
This morning was beautifully overcast before the sun finally won out over the clouds, a little before noon. I was hiking the Monte Vista Trail near Salmon Falls on the South Fork of the American River. There were loads of yellow and purple wildflowers (along with the ever-present poison oak), and the views were pretty nice, too!
