September 1985 — Last week I shared some images of Leavenworth, Washington, shot by my mom in the autumn of 1985; today I’m finishing up this batch of slides with views of Highway 2, Stevens Pass, and the fall colors in the Cascade mountains of Central Washington. (I also include one Leavenworth shot that slipped by me last week.)
I’ve previously shared photos of the area around Leavenworth, Washington, where my mom spent part of her childhood. I’ve been able to visit a few times, and my parents also returned a few times on their own. My images this week (except for the photo above) were all shot during a trip the two of them took in September 1985.
Some of my very favorite old family slides are the ones dating from the 1950s and 1960s; even if I don’t have very much information about where they were shot, it’s great to see vintage cars and places that may have completely changed over the decades since the photos were taken. And of course it’s wonderful to see my parents […]
I’ve been on loads of fishing trips since I met the Big Guy 30-plus years ago, but I never imagined my mom and dad going salmon fishing until I came across these slides from 1950. My mom had relatives, the Ramsdells, living in Port Townsend, and they had what looks to me like a wonderful outing on Al Ramsdell’s boat.
June-July 1979 — We had started out from Vancouver, British Columbia, early on the morning of June 30 and caught one of the B.C. ferries, the Queen of Saanich, which carried us to Swartz Bay, outside Victoria. Our plan was to board the ferry Coho in the morning and reach Port Angeles by around noon. But things didn’t go quite […]
June 1978 — We had reached Leavenworth, Washington, rather late in the afternoon on a Tuesday, with no time or energy to explore; and so we actually spent two nights at the KOA — with the Wenatchee River just a few steps from our campsite. I originally shared these images back in February 2017. In between window shopping among the […]
May 1976 — My last group of slides featuring Leavenworth, Washington, include some views of the area around Front Street and the Waterfront Park along the Wenatchee River. When I originally shared these images back in April 2017, I wrote about some of the history of Leavenworth’s transition from a dying former railroad town to a tourist mecca; but it’s […]
When I originally shared these images, back in April 2017, I included a short history of this small ski area just outside the town of Leavenworth, along with a video (see below). Although the area surrounding Leavenworth’s ski hill has changed somewhat — more houses, and taller trees blocking the view of the ski jump — it’s still easy enough […]
May 1976 — I wasn’t invited along (but that’s okay!) when my mom and dad took this road trip up to central Washington State. Mom had recently graduated from California State University, Sacramento, and this getaway to her favorite place on Earth was her well-deserved reward. Leavenworth sits in the midst of the Cascade range, and there’s plenty of beautiful […]
