Life goes on

Due to the drought and the heat, large areas around Folsom Lake are already dry and full of brittle weeds; but on my visit to New York Creek a few days ago I came across a small feeder creek that was still very green and full of animal life. In the morning shade of an old oak, with a cool breeze coming from the southeast, it was a very welcome resting spot along my hike — not only for me, but for birds and insects as well. I could see tall cattails and common mullein growing along the line of the creekbed; although the creek itself isn’t readily visible, the plants are still able to get moisture from the soil.
