Sense of spring

Menzies fiddleneck and purple vetch grow near a fallen palm tree

As I wandered around an abandoned and overgrown portion of Spanish Flat Campground at Lake Berryessa, I found an oak woodland covered in foxtails and invasive vetch as well as a surprising variety of flowers growing wild alongside forgotten pieces of roadway and cement pads. I can only guess at what this hilltop headland looked like in its prime; these days, the developed campground sits below on flat ground, with shade trees far and few between. Most of the wildflowers were familiar to me, but the other blooms must have been deliberately planted here, like the bright yellow and red Chasmanthe plants, natives of South Africa.
