High hopes, low water

As I promised a couple of days ago, here are the final images from our walk down to the Navarro River just before we left Hendy Woods State Park. According to my copy of The Hiker’s Hip Pocket Guide to the Mendocino Coast, “The Navarro River is the largest coastal river between Humboldt County’s Eel River and Sonoma County’s Russian River. All three of these rivers pass through Mendocino County. While the Navarro shrinks to hardly more than a trickle in late summer, in winter it can be a raging torrent.” We were a bit disappointed to find the river so low in late October; we were also sorry to see “Toxic Algae Alert” signs near the river, which kept us from getting closer to the water.
