Exploring Lupine Shores
The Lupine Shores camping area sits on the tip of a peninsula at the former site of Lake Berryessa’s Steele Canyon Resort. We visited here about a week ago and found the camping grounds closed for the winter. But in April 2024 it was open, and while the camp sites were still vacant, I found so many great places to explore that I’m always ready to go back during the early spring. I’ll be sharing more images from our April 2024 visit to Lupine Shores in upcoming posts.
Up on a rise not far from where we parked our car, I found this Big berry manzanita (Arctostaphylos glauca). I’ve seen a lot of manzanita all over Northern California, but I don’t recall ever seeing one with fruit like this. These gorgeous trees can grow to be 100 years old, but they don’t produce fruit until they are at least 20 years old. So this manzanita has been living here for quite a long time, and hopefully it will get the chance to live many more years.
