These days when we head off to spend Christmas with the Big Guy’s family, it means a 3-hour airplane ride to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. I do enjoy those trips, but sometimes I miss the days when his folks were living on Bay Farm Island in Alameda, only an hour or so away from our house via the freeway. We’d […]
Here’s another great seasonal episode that I’ve only recently discovered. The Merry TubaChristmas concert is an ongoing tradition; it’s been an annual event since 1975, and this year it was held on December 2. And as Huell remarks early in the episode, if this doesn’t get you into the Christmas spirit, nothing will! Huell attends the annual holiday concert at […]
I like to share Christmas-themed episodes during this time of year, and this is one that nearly escaped my attention, as I had no idea what “Nacimientos” meant until I took a closer look. I think this is a wonderful tradition, and I hope you’ll enjoy Huell’s visit, originally aired in 1999, as much as I did. In this holiday […]
I’ve never featured this 2004 episode of California’s Gold in which Huell visits the Eckes’ poinsetta ranch in Encenitas, but I did link to it a couple of years ago. After spotting some blue and orange poinsettia plants for sale in the supermarket this morning, I thought it would be good to take another look at where and how these […]
On this mostly grey and chilly Christmas Eve, I spent my afternoon drinking mugs of hot tea and rewatching a collection of videos from my favorite childhood Christmas specials — Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the 1966 animated version with Boris Karloff). I finished off by watching “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” because I’ve always adored the Peanuts characters created by Charles Schulz, and the accompanying music by Vince Guaraldi never fails to make me smile. As much as I enjoyed reliving my childhood memories with the other three Christmas specials, this is the one that captures the true spirit of the season best for me. Maybe you’ll enjoy watching it too. https://dailymotion.com/video/x2cgz0g

Today I decided the best way to tell the story of our trip home from Christmas in Montana was through a few excerpts from my travel journal. Monday, December 28, 1992 — “When we left [heading home] on Sunday we drove through Missoula and took 90 East to avoid the Lost Trail Pass on 93, thinking the snow conditions might be […]
I’ve never had opportunity to seriously explore the numerous small towns north of Fort Worth during our Christmas visits, but I’ve seen just enough to know I’d like to see more. In past years, we’ve enjoyed the food and the historical decor at Reno Red’s, though I’ve never actually seen the place in daylight. Even in the edges of suburbia, […]
