Shot on November 9, 2018, from San Francisco’s Temporary Transbay Terminal. The grey sky in the last two images is not Bay Area fog but rather smoke from the devastating Camp Fire in Butte County.

As much fun as it can be wandering around in an unfamiliar place, sometimes it’s very comforting to find a map or a sign confirming your position and helping you get re-oriented. I sometimes find maps a little confusing, but I really love those that helpfully point out my exact position for me. In looking through my archives for these types of images, I realized I don’t shoot nearly enough photos of this type of sign; from now on I plan to more faithfully hunt them down.
The smoky conditions continue — our Air Quality Index (AQI) at 5 p.m. is 175, and the smell of smoke is everywhere. The almanac reports sunset today is at 4:52 p.m. — but the sun was already disappearing behind a thick bank of smog at four o’clock.
I love traveling by train because I get a peek at so many sights I would never see driving down the highway in a car or bus.
