Vineyard trail
With over 30 wineries and 9,000 acres of vineyards currently in Lake County, it’s never too surprising to find yourself driving or hiking in close proximity to a vast field of carefully staked grapevines. On my hike to the McVicar Audubon Sanctuary near Lower Lake, part of the trail ran alongside a portion of land belonging to Vigilence Vineyards. I’m not especially interested in wine, but I am intrigued by their sustainable farming method of using sheep in the vineyards, as well as their efforts at preserving habitat for wildlife. Sadly, I didn’t spot any sheep during my hike — but I did hear a lot of gobbling from some wild turkeys hanging out in the thicket of trees adajent to the field.
