Mendocino beauty spots
Two locations in Mendocino County, near the town of Point Arena — Stornetta to the north, and Moat Creek to the south. Stornetta has become a favorite fishing area for the Big Guy, and I’ve enjoyed exploring the trails there, where occasionally you may encounter grazing dairy cattle. In early December 2023, I visited both sites on the same day. I entered Stornetta via the south gate, located behind the city hall building. (Another entrance can be found down the narrow road that leads to the Point Arena lighthouse.)
I’m always drawn to Moat Creek Beach Access when the tide is low and there’s a chance to explore tide pools. Stalking the tide pools was one of my favorite activities when I was young; but these days I’m much too worried about slipping on the wet rocks. Even so, it’s a beautiful spot — and popular with surfers as well as beachcombers. In the afternoon, I had the place pretty much to myself and, as you’ll see in an upcoming post, I was able to enjoy a beautiful sunset.
