Morning rounds

Here are a few images from my visit to Rossmoor Bar this morning, on the south side of the American River in Rancho Cordova. While the bike and hiking trails that run alongside the river are pleasant enough, sometimes it’s more rewarding to break away from the crowds and follow your own path.

Coyote pup

I’m never surprised to see a deer somewhere along this Folsom path, especially since it’s very near the American River. But this was my first time encountering a coyote here. This young female sat down and looked at me, took a few minutes to ponder, and then doubled back on her trail and disappeared into the brush.

Secret squirrel

I was surprised to spot this ground squirrel perched high above me on the rocks, mostly because his position left him very vulnerable to any hungry bird of prey who might come along. Axochiapan is about 2.5 hours south of Mexico City on today’s roads; but I’m not sure how long the trip actually took us in our VW camper, nicknamed […]

On the wing

These may not be the greatest Canada goose photos I’ve ever shot, but I can’t help liking them. Yesterday morning I went out to Folsom Lake with the Big Guy. It was still relatively cool at at 10 o’clock, and I was sitting on a rock gazing at what’s left of New York Creek, which currently looks like this: Suddenly, […]

Surprise

Sometimes I have to look really hard to find the beauty that inspires me to use my camera. And other times, the beauty just pops up at me unexpectedly, where I least expect it. Like the oleanders I had just trimmed and tossed into the green waste bin. Or the late afternoon sun glowing orange on the side of a […]
