The guard house, built between 1857 and 1859, is the oldest surviving structure on the island. Alcatraz was originally intended as a defensive fort but never saw battle; instead it served as a military prison until the mid 1930s, when it (briefly) became a federal penitentiary.

The former First Congregationalist Church building in San Francisco now serves as campus for the Academy of Art University — Liberal Arts. I walked past these steps several times during my stay in the city, and I couldn’t resist the urge to photograph them.
