Memory Monday, Week 57

My last bunch of slides from the 1950s were in a box labeled “San Diego, 1959” — but it turns out they’re actually images from Chicago, possibly part of the 1957 trip. This bit of information certainly helped clear up my confusion about what a Second World War German U-boat was doing in San Diego’s harbor! Below, these three decomissioned […]

Sonoma coast holiday

I’ve been at the coast with the Big Guy for a few days, with limited internet access and no phone service at all.  Although I’ll soon have loads of new photos to share, this one — taken by the side of Highway 1 near Salt Point — will have to serve as a bit of a teaser. I can hardly wait to share the rest!

Merry Christmas Eve!

On this mostly grey and chilly Christmas Eve, I spent my afternoon drinking mugs of hot tea and rewatching a collection of videos from my favorite childhood Christmas specials — Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the 1966 animated version with Boris Karloff). I finished off by watching “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” because I’ve always adored the Peanuts characters created by Charles Schulz, and the accompanying music by Vince Guaraldi never fails to make me smile. Memory Monday, Week 54

New York, 1957 — From Niagara Falls and Buffalo to the island of Manhattan and the top of the Empire State Building, with amazing views of the East River, Roosevelt Island, the Queensborough Bridge, and the Chrysler Building — I’m only sorry there aren’t more images to share from this road trip (or if there are I haven’t run across […]

Memory Monday, Week 53

Washington D.C., 1957 — Dwight D. Eisenhower was in the White House and I Love Lucy was in its final season on TV when my mom and dad along with my eldest sister visited the nation’s capital in 1957. They were undertaking a pretty epic road trip that began with my mom and sister taking the train from California to […]

Memory Monday, Week 52

Believe it or not, it’s been a full year since I began this series; you can find my first Memory Monday post here, sharing a family trip through Minnesota, South Dakota, and the Grand Tetons of Wyoming. Just as I was beginning to run out of steam and thinking about retiring the series, my mom managed to dig up a […]
