The glory of my genius

On this visit out to Denio’s swap meet in mid August, I didn’t shoot as many photos as I normally do, and I didn’t buy anything. But it did feel good to get out of the house and spend an hour or so wandering the property, checking out the wide range of colorful and sometimes strange items offered up.

More from Eagle Lake

The remainder of my phone pictures from September 2023, showing the area of Spalding Marina and the view from Dow Butte. The informational sign shown above reads as follows: Eagle Lake sits at about 5,110 feet above sea level in beautiful northeastern California, about 16 miles north of Susanville in Lassen County. It is the second largest natural freshwater lake […]

Lassen County, looking back

Back in early September 2023 I spent a week with the Big Guy next to Eagle Lake, in Lassen County. We were 45 minutes away from Susanville, in an area called Spaulding that was basically a grid of dirt and gravel streets lined with cabins, modular homes, and a few mobile homes — nothing too fancy, but we fell in […]

Buc-ee’s Fort Worth, July 2025

I may never in my life see the inside of another Buc-ee’s store — and I certainly never expected to visit the one in Fort Worth, Texas. The company has stores throughout the much of the U.S., from Florida to Virgina, from Wisconsin to Arizona; thus far, there are no locations in the Pacific Northwest or in California. I’ve since […]

Memory Monday: Scenes from Soda Bay

Between 2014 and 2016, the month of May meant spending a week with the Big Guy and his parents at Soda Bay in Lake County, in the shadow of Mt Konocti. Rather than drive around and explore as I tend to do nowadays, my outings were restricted to walking distance from the area where we were staying, which happened to […]

In old Grapevine

We were in Grapevine, Texas, on business on this particular afternoon in June 2025, and the weather was quite warm. So while there wasn’t time for a lot of sightseeing, I did manage to take a quick stroll down the street and take note of a few historical details. I later realized that I had been here at least once […]

Partway up a mountain

Of all the times I happened to be travelling along Highway 29 in Lake County (west of Clear Lake) and noticed the interestingly named Bottle Rock Road, I never imagined that one day I’d be turning onto that very road in search of a new hiking spot. It was already past noon when I arrived at Boggs Lake Preserve, on […]

Angels Camp Museum

This morning, Google Photos was nice enough to point out that it’s been four years since I last visited the Angels Camp Museum in Calaveras County. Much of the time, I ignore these little reminders, but today the timing was ideal. Only the other day, the Big Guy mentioned to me that we should go for a drive somewhere, flattering […]
