Lines

The theme for Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge this week is Lines. I shot these photos at the Lakeport Historic Courthouse Museum last May. It really wasn’t all that long ago that a similar setup to this switchboard was state of the art in telephone communications! The operator controlled the lines and connected people to the numbers they wanted to reach. As the museum’s information card says:

No matter how many millions of dollars were spent on cables and switchboards, the quality of the telephone service depended on the girl at the exchange end of the wire.

(Adding a shout-out to my mom, who used to work at a more modern version of the above switchboard in the then-small town of Roseville, California.)

    • Yes, it would be fairly intimidating to start out. I think I’ve seen comedy bits on TV where the operator has a lot of angry people connected to the wrong party.
