Gabby and her chair

I’ve been very slowly working at transferring my old Hi8 videotapes to DVD, and from there to my hard drive. I’ve been editing them with Windows Movie Maker and then uploading — with a little additional editing — to YouTube. Much of the footage is devoted to our three dogs, Buster, Gabby, and Pinkie. My final results are far from professional, but that’s okay. Most of the videos are at least 10 years old, and I’m just very happy that I’m finally able to watch them with more smiles than tears. As I wrote in the description of this video on YouTube, Gabby wasn’t allowed on the furniture inside the house, but once we moved this old chair to the back patio, she adopted it as her own. She loved that chair! One of her favorite things was to curl up in it during a spring storm and watch the rain fall. The music is Tucson Tease by John Deley and the 41 Players, courtesy of YouTube’s collection of ad-free tunes.

Moonlight Sonata

Last Saturday night I walked over to the bluffs that overlook Lake Natoma and the city of Folsom, and I waited for the full moon to rise.  I knew with my small hand-held camera I’d have trouble getting clear images.  I didn’t care — I had to at least try. It was chilly, but I was alone in the dark […]

Just around the corner…

… there’s a rainbow in the sky! Here in California, we’ve currently got another “firehose” pointed at us, with a few more feet of snow as well as pounding rain and lashing winds. It’s good news: every inch of snow, every drop of rain brings us further away from the drought of the past five years. To those of us […]

Chairs in the Georgia Northern private rail […]

Musician at large

I met Kenny last July as he sat in front of the local CVS chain drugstore.  He complimented my car (a 1972 Chevy El Camino), and I complimented his guitar.  We chatted for a few minutes, and he told me he spends a lot of time around Negro Bar.  When I confessed I was working on learning to play the mandolin, he offered me a few helpful tips from the depths of his experience. That was four months ago and I haven’t run into him since then; but the other day when the Big Guy happened to mention he’d recently seen a man sitting under the Lake Natoma Crossing playing guitar, I wondered if it might be Kenny.  And I suddenly remembered that Kenny had invited me to look for his videos on YouTube. I’ve never had to worry about not having a roof over my head, but I know that, in different circumstances, any of us might find ourselves in a similar situation. Today, the weather here is windy, cold and very wet.  I’m really hoping that Kenny is warm and safe somewhere.
