WPC: Solitude

The Daily Post Weekly Photo Challenge for the week of February 3, 2017. This week, show us what being alone means to you. I was going through some old pictures when I found these images of Grizzly Island Wildlife Area, located in the Suisun Marsh in Solano County. California’s wetlands are always in danger of disappearing altogether, but this area […]

Orangevale Avenue Bridge

This historic bridge is pretty close to my house.  It’s not exactly famous, nor is it part of a major thoroughfare. It was built over Gold Creek in 1915, with a length of 160 feet, and was apparently designed to last for roughly 50 years.  These photos, unless otherwise noted, were shot in January 2005, when the bridge was still […]

Storm damages

I’m going to blame our recent series of storms for the fact I haven’t been venturing out for my usual morning hikes lately.  So I haven’t yet had a first-hand view of the big rock and mud slide that closed the bike trail near Negro Bar four days ago.  (Yesterday the Big Guy reported the trail was still completely blocked.) In past years, we’ve enjoyed the food and the historical decor at Reno Red’s, though I’ve never actually seen the place in daylight. Even in the edges of suburbia, […]

Just around the corner…

… there’s a rainbow in the sky! Here in California, we’ve currently got another “firehose” pointed at us, with a few more feet of snow as well as pounding rain and lashing winds. It’s good news: every inch of snow, every drop of rain brings us further away from the drought of the past five years. To those of us […]

Memory Monday, Week 9

Sitting just north of San Francisco’s Ocean Beach is the famous Cliff House Restaurant.  It has a complicated and fascinating history and is currently on its fifth incarnation.  The first Cliff House was built in 1853 by one of California’s more colorful Gold Rush characters, Sam Brannan.  In the 1956 photo below, you can just see the top and rear of […]
