Here are more of my sightings from a recent Saturday at Denio’s Market in Roseville. It’s probably a good thing that I don’t live in a bigger house; I would be more seriously tempted to buy all the wonderful things on sale!

In the middle of the night I had what seemed at the time a brilliant inspiration for Throwback Thursday, although I remember thinking it would take a fair bit of work to put together. Alas, when I woke up this morning I had absolutely no clue what that fantastic idea may have been (and maybe it’s just as well)! So […]
As I consulted my calendar this morning I learned that next Wednesday, June 8, is World Oceans Day. First observed in 2009, according to the United Nations web site “The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and […]
The historic lighthouse at Point Cabrillo is only one of the cool buildings to be found at the Point Cabrillo Lightstation State Historic Park in Mendocino County. Sitting just off Highway 1 and adjacent to the parking lot is a restored farmhouse which is all that remains of the former town of Pine Grove. The buildings at Point Cabrillo are […]
I picked up a stack of photo albums over the weekend and was very excited to start sharing them, but now I’m having second (and third) thoughts. These were rescued from a storage locker, so apparently abandoned?? And I still have a lot of unanswered questions about where and when many of the photos were shot. But the more I […]
It turned out that, for me, today was an excellent day to go out to Denio’s and have a look around. The weather was comfortable, with a pleasant breeze; I found so much cool stuff to photograph — and a huge collection of vintage photos that came home with me. I haven’t started sorting through them yet, but I’m really […]
As we drive along Highway 1 in the southern half of Mendocino County, if we notice a sign saying “Coastal Access” we stop to check it out for its fishing potential. This was what happened back in March when we happened upon the Spring Ranch Nature Preserve, just south of the town of Mendocino. It’s very easy to miss, with […]
The name of 16th century conquistador Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo has been attached to quite a number of geographical landmarks and structures, mostly in Southern California. So I was a little confused when I first heard about the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse in Mendocino County, and of course I had to visit the site and see it for myself. On my first […]
Huell Howser visited quite a few historic California lighthouses throughout the years as he filmed one series or another. I’ve previously featured shows in which he explored the Point Sur Lighthouse, the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse, the St. George Reef Lighthouse, and even the tiny Battery Point Lighthouse up in Crescent City. And although he didn’t make it to every one […]
